Running Scared. It's an album that presents a series of beautifully desolate valleys, but without the volcanic peaks to lend them a greater definition. It's tempting to view Toward the Low Sun as the sort of record that was sequenced according to the order the songs were recorded, as the performances grow markedly more assured and intuitive the deeper you venture into the collection.
After an iffy start, Toward the Low Sun thankfully picks up a head full of steam in its closing stretch-- hopefully, this momentum won't dissipate over another seven-year layoff.

After a couple of album-length missteps and the always-inspiring spectacle of their live show, there's certainly an 'if it ain't broke' argument raised by Toward The Low Sun 's rejuvenating of an already well-thumbed sound.
That it continues to be as effective as ever works, I think, largely in their favour, and in ours - even if there's a fair argument to be made that it's 'simply' another good record to add to their back catalogue.
